This policy is a linking document for the more specific policies on Music, Art, PE, Literacy and Cross - curricular policies. All pupils will be given the opportunity to participate in activities, appropriate to the experience and level of ability of each pupil. The Federation schools offer a broad range of Arts entitlements to our pupils. The Arts support and enhance many areas of the curriculum. Rationale The arts offer opportunities to stimulate creativity and imagination. They provide visual, tactile and sensory experiences and are a unique way to understand and respond to the world. Art-forms of all cultures are considered of equal value and relevance. Using the Arts provides powerful means to develop understanding of the world and to develop pupils own emotions and feelings. Involvement in the creative process is considered as important as the finished product. Individual responses and diversity are celebrated, promoting confidence and raising self esteem, where each pupil can develop, and feel the support of pupils and staff in a caring, supportive environment. Pupils will be given the opportunity to expand their ability and enjoy the subject. The skills they acquire could be used long after leaving school. Whether it be Art and Design, Music, Drama, Dance, or Technical, it is hoped that their horizons have been broadened by their school activities. The arts help pupils to explore and express their thoughts and feelings, learning skills to take them onto extra studies and especially vocational qualifications, if appropriate. The schools take every opportunity to build on well-established links with outside agencies promoting or delivering the Arts in the region in particular Gateshead Libraries and Arts / Music Service. Strong links within the Federation schools and with other schools/establishments e.g. The Sage positively promote the Arts and provide excellent Drama opportunities. Why the Federation provides Arts Education The federation views the Arts as integral in the development of the whole child emotionally, aesthetically, spiritually, intellectually and socially. It is essential that the pupils artistic pursuits are considered in the long term. Pupils should leave school wherever possible with the desire to be artistically creative in their own lives. The Arts give opportunities for lifelong pleasure and enjoyment. The Arts are an integral part of culture, past and present, they help pupils understand themselves and relate to others, forging important links between the home, school and wider world. Key Aims and Objectives 1. To increase pupils active involvement in the Arts and cultural opportunities. Encourage activity to provide opportunities to work alongside a professional artist for school and the community to observe and value the artistic work of others encourage an awareness of cultural diversity to provide opportunities for the choir, singing group, drama, technical support to frequently practise in the run up to school performances. These aims will be achieved through programmes of study for each of the areas of music, drama, dance and art (see policies for music, drama (within literacy policy), dance (within PE policy), and art. Opportunities for cross-curricular activities will be used in conjunction with relevant staff. These will include:- Links between the four arts areas Links across the whole curriculum subjects as and when appropriate Display material and artistic projects using ICT Meeting and exchanging arts in out of school projects to strengthen an awareness of the students place in the community Monitoring and Evaluation Monitoring and evaluation of the arts is in accordance with the Federation approach, National Curriculum levels and external accreditation, where appropriate. This programme will be differentiated to allow the fullest participation by the whole school population. See: Assessment and Monitoring Policy. Staffing In order to give the pupils access to the full range of activities, which would allow the stated aims to be fulfilled, specialist teachers are employed to teach the four arts areas. Teaching assistants and support staff are used where it is deemed appropriate. Resources Resources are stored in relevant classrooms / areas. The schools have designated, well equipped independent areas for the arts. Each of the four art areas are well resourced to meet the diverse needs of the pupils. Subject co-ordinators are responsible for the ordering and organising of resources both consumables and events through their allocated budget, directed on a yearly basis. Review of Policy This policy will be reviewed on an annual basis to review and revise where necessary and to include national and local directives where applicable. This will be reviewed on a date that is commensurate and its adoption by the Governing Body. We use the Gateshed Music Service. Throughout the school year further opportunities for pupils to experience the arts are provided by: visits from professional musicians, artists, dancers, theatre groups community based projects national competitions Dryden Arts Summary: KS3/4 All KS3/4 students have a Creative Development session once a week. The session links to the current topic and will focus on art, drama, music and creativity (staff will choose an arts focus that is relevant to the topic) Drama is often touched upon in English sessions (role play) KS4 work on ASDAN units which include creative modules. Additional: - The English KS3/4 curriculum includes lessons on creative writing, poetry and exploring a variety of texts including plays. There are cross curricular opportunities in all subjects that allow students to engage with the arts. Music is a huge part of everyday life for our students with profound and multiple learning difficulties including use of daily individual Good Morning songs in communication and weekly interactive sessions with one of the tutors from the Gateshead Music Service. Post16 Pupils follow a selection of modules of work. Art and design is explored through creative and cultural units delivered throughout the year, with cross curricular links e.g. the use of ICT to create films to support the caf. During the summer term, all students are involved in planning and performing our Leavers Show. Dance units are covered within Sports and Leisure sessions during the academic year. Across school Art, drama and music are used as part of learning strategies/activities to teach all subjects to all pupils and particularly those with profound and multiple learning difficulties. The music therapist works 1 day per week across school. Hill Top Arts Summary: KS3 Each week pupils access 2 lessons each of Art, Music and Drama. In the Spring Term PE lessons are dedicated to Dance. KS4 Pupils are given the opportunity to opt to take Arts Subjects as part of their 2 option afternoons. All pupils in Year 10 study towards Bronze Arts Award and in Year 11 they study towards Silver Arts Award. Additional:- There are cross curricular opportunities in all subjects.
